The brief
Shelly's chilli-red A4 came in for a maintenance service, and the brake side had a slew of things wanting urgent attention: the front and rear brake hoses perished, a caliper jamming, and an ABS fault needing the module addressed. All of it on the brakes, all of it worth doing properly in one go. The flexible brake hoses carry the fluid from the rigid lines to the calipers, and over the years the rubber perishes, swells inside and cracks outside, which can restrict the flow or leak. A caliper that's jamming, the piston or the slides seized, drags the brake and pulls the car. And an ABS module fault needs the unit reading and coded back in so the anti-lock works. So the call was new brake hoses front and rear, the jamming caliper serviced or replaced, the brakes bled, and the ABS module sorted.
The diagnosis
A brake inspection and a diagnostic scan confirmed it: the brake hoses front and rear were perished, hardened and cracking; a caliper had a seized slide, jamming and dragging; and the scan logged an ABS module fault. The pads and discs were checked too, healthy at this point, so the issues were the hoses, the caliper and the ABS. So it was a brake hose replacement front and rear, a caliper service, a full brake bleed, and the ABS module coded back in with the codes cleared.
The work
The perished brake hoses were removed front and rear and new genuine Audi-spec hoses fitted, the connections checked. The jamming caliper was stripped, cleaned, the slides and seals serviced and freed off so it moves cleanly, and refitted. The whole brake system was bled through with fresh fluid until it ran clean and the pedal was firm. The ABS module was coded back in through the proper procedure and the stored faults cleared. A road test confirmed a firm pedal, even, progressive braking with no drag or pull, and the ABS active with no warning.
The outcome
Fresh brake hoses front and rear, a caliper that applies and releases cleanly with no drag, a firm pedal, even braking, and the ABS back online with no fault. The A4 went home with the brake side sorted. Perished hoses, a jamming caliper and an ABS fault all add up to braking you can't trust, so doing the lot together put it right, the safety job done properly.
