BMW 528i parked at the workshop, in for an underbody rattle diagnosis.

The brief

A black 528i came in with a rattle from under the car, the kind of mystery noise that nags at you on every bump and uneven road and is surprisingly easy to chase up the wrong tree. He brought it in and the team put it on the lift. Underneath there are several covers and undertrays, metal and plastic, that shield the engine bay, the floor and the exhaust, fixed with clips, bolts and screws. Over time, and especially after kerbs, speed bumps and the odd scrape, a fastener works loose or a clip lets go, and the cover starts to vibrate against the body, that's the rattle. It's a small thing, but a cover hanging loose can drop further, drag, or come away entirely, so it needed securing properly.

The BMW 528i on the lift, the rattle tracked to a loose undercarriage cover.

The diagnosis

On the lift the noise was tracked down quickly: a metal undercarriage cover had worked loose, a couple of its fixings gone, so it was flapping against the underbody over bumps, exactly what makes that rattle. Everything else underneath, the exhaust, the suspension, the heat shields, checked out solid. So it was a straightforward fix: refit the cover properly, replace the missing and worn fasteners, and make sure it's held securely so it can't work loose again.

The loose metal cover with its fixings worked free.

The work

The loose undercarriage cover was removed, checked over, and refitted properly, with new fasteners where the old ones had gone or stripped, every fixing torqued so it sits flush and tight against the underbody. The rest of the underbody covers and shields were checked over while the car was up, and any other slightly loose fixings nipped up. A road test confirmed the rattle was gone, the underside quiet over bumps and rough roads.

The cover refitted with new fasteners, sitting flush and secure.

The outcome

No more rattle from underneath, the undercarriage cover sitting flush and secure, and a quiet ride over bumps again. The 528i went home with the noise sorted. A loose underbody cover is a small thing that gets annoying fast and can become a bigger problem if it drops or drags, so refitting it properly put it right, and a reminder that the odd mystery noise is worth getting checked.
