The brief
The 318i was due for its scheduled service, and the owner asked for a thorough job: not just the oil and filter, but a proper look over the consumables and the major systems while the car was up on the lift.
That is the right way to treat a service. It is the one regular chance to catch the things that wear quietly, the plugs, the filters, the brakes, the fluids, before any of them turn into a roadside problem or a warning light. Better to find them on the ramp and deal with them in one visit than have them surface one at a time.
The diagnosis
The BMW handset scan came back clean, no stored fault codes. The cooling system held pressure, and the suspension and steering checked out within tolerance.
Plenty had reached the end of its life, though. The spark plugs were worn and due for renewal. The engine air filter was clogged enough to change rather than leave another interval. The brake discs and pads, front and rear, were down past their useful limit and ready for replacement. And the brake fluid's moisture content, while still in spec, was creeping up.
The work
The engine oil was drained and refilled with the correct BMW-spec oil, with a new oil filter. A fresh set of BMW-spec spark plugs went in, and a new engine air filter. The brake discs and pads were replaced front and rear, with new wear sensors. Brake fluid, coolant and washer fluid were topped up.
Then the suspension and steering were inspected with the readings recorded in the service log, and the service indicator on the cluster reset through the handset.
The outcome
Clean scan, fresh oil and plugs, a new air filter, new brakes all round, fluids topped, and the service indicator reset.
The 318i went home properly sorted, with nothing left hanging over it. For the owner that is the value of a thorough service: the plugs, filter and brakes all dealt with in one go, with a documented check of everything else, rather than a quick oil change that leaves the real wear items for next time.
