The brief

The 530i was due for its scheduled service, and the owner wanted a full inspection on top of the oil-and-filter, with the consumables checked properly so nothing was sneaking up on him.

That is the right way to treat a service on a car like this. The fluids and filters are the routine part; the value is in the time on the ramp where the things that wear quietly get caught, the plugs and coils, the battery, the brakes, before any of them turns into a roadside problem or a warning light. Better to find them now and deal with them in one organised visit.

The diagnosis

The diagnostic scan came back clean, no stored fault codes. The suspension, belts, hoses and underbody all checked out.

A fair bit had reached the end of its useful life, though. The spark plugs were worn and due, and with them the ignition coils, the same age and not far behind, were worth doing at the same time. The engine air filter and the cabin filter were both loaded enough to change. The brake fluid's moisture content was creeping up. And the battery had aged enough on a load test to be due for renewal before it caught the owner out.

The work

The engine oil was drained and refilled with the correct BMW-spec oil, with a new oil filter. A fresh set of spark plugs and a new set of ignition coils went in. A new engine air filter and a new cabin filter. The brake fluid was bled and refilled. A new BMW-spec AGM battery went in and was registered to the car. Coolant and washer fluid were topped up.

Then the suspension, belts and hoses were inspected with the readings recorded, and the service interval indicator reset on the BMW handset.

The outcome

Clean scan, fresh oil and filters, new plugs and coils, a new battery, brake fluid renewed, fluids topped, and the service indicator reset.

The 530i went home properly sorted, with nothing left hanging over it. For the owner that is the value of a thorough service: the ignition, the battery and the filters all dealt with in one go, with a documented check of everything else, rather than a quick oil change that leaves the real wear items for the next visit, or worse, for the side of the road.
