Mercedes-Benz C180 60,000 km service.

A Mercedes-Benz C180 came in for its 60,000 km major service. Oil and all the filters changed, the automatic transmission fluid replaced, fluids and brakes checked, and a full inspection, all sound.

The brief

Daniel brought his C180 in for its 60,000 km major service, with the automatic transmission fluid done at the same time. A major service is a bigger job than a regular oil change, it's the milestone where the longer-life items come due, and the gearbox fluid is one of them. The engine oil and filter go on every service. At a major interval the air filter, cabin filter and fuel filter come due too, and the brake fluid, which absorbs moisture over time and needs replacing on a schedule, gets done. The automatic transmission fluid does a hard job, lubricating, cooling and hydraulically working the gearbox, and it degrades with heat and miles, so refreshing it at the right interval keeps the box shifting cleanly and protects it. Skip it and shifts get harsh and the box wears faster.

The engine oil drained on the Mercedes-Benz C180 during the major service.

The diagnosis

On the ramp the C180 got the full major-service going-over: oil and filter due, the air, cabin and fuel filters due, the brake fluid due a change, the automatic transmission fluid due, the brake pads and discs measured with life left, the suspension and steering checked for play, the tyres checked, and the belts, hoses and fluid levels looked over. Nothing was failing, the longer-life items were simply due, which is what a 60,000 km service is for. So it was the full major-service schedule plus the transmission fluid change.

The new oil, air, cabin and fuel filters ready to fit.

The work

The engine oil was drained and refilled with the correct Mercedes-spec oil and a new filter, the air, cabin and fuel filters replaced, and the brake fluid flushed through and replaced. The automatic transmission fluid was drained and refilled with the correct Mercedes-spec fluid and the transmission filter renewed, filled to the right level at the right temperature the way the box wants it. The brakes were inspected and measured, the suspension and steering checked, the tyres rotated and set to pressure, and the service indicator reset. A road test confirmed a clean start, smooth running, crisp shifts, steady braking, and no warning lights.

The automatic transmission fluid drained and the transmission filter renewed.

The outcome

Fresh oil and all the filters, new brake fluid, fresh transmission fluid and a clean filter, brakes and suspension checked and sound, the service light reset, and a clean health check. The C180 went home with the 60,000 km service done properly. The major intervals are where the expensive parts get protected, so doing the gearbox fluid and the brake fluid on schedule is what keeps the big repairs away.

The brake fluid flushed and the brakes inspected on the ramp.
