Mercedes-Benz GLA180 service with a new battery.

A Mercedes-Benz GLA180 came in for an oil change service, and the scan flagged the battery on its way out. Oil and filters done, a new genuine battery fitted and registered to the car, all sound.

Mercedes-Benz GLA180 at the workshop for an oil change service.

The brief

Mr Amos brought his GLA180 in for an oil change service, and a service here means going over the whole car, not just the oil. Every part gets a look for wear, leaks or damage, and the car gets a computerised scan as well as a physical one, which is how the battery turned up. The engine oil and filter do the hard work of keeping the engine clean and protected, so they go on schedule. The scan, run with Mercedes equipment, reads the state of things like the battery and the coolant condition, and on this car it showed the battery worn and due replacement. On a modern Mercedes a new battery has to be registered to the car so the charging system treats it as new, so the job became the service plus a battery, done together.

The diagnosis

On the ramp and on the scan the GLA180 came up needing the oil and filter, due, and the battery: the scan showed it worn and not far off failing, due replacement. The coolant condition, the brakes, the suspension and the rest of the car checked out fine. So it was an oil change service plus a new battery with registration, the service items refreshed and the battery sorted the right way.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA180 scanned with Mercedes equipment during the service, flagging the worn battery.

The work

The engine oil was drained and refilled with the correct Mercedes-spec oil and a new oil filter, the other filters and fluids checked and topped, the brakes, suspension and tyres inspected. The worn battery was removed and a new genuine Mercedes battery of the correct type fitted, then registered to the car's power management with the diagnostic system so the charging strategy is set for a fresh battery. The charging voltage was checked good. A road test confirmed a clean start, smooth running, the battery holding charge, and no warning lights.

The outcome

Fresh oil and filters, fluids topped, a new battery properly registered, the charging system tailored to it, brakes and suspension checked, and no warning lights. Mr Amos got the GLA180 back serviced and the battery sorted before it left him stranded. The scan that's part of the service is what caught the battery in time, which is the point of going through the whole car rather than just dropping the oil.
