Volkswagen Golf engine noise and hot aircon, resolved.

A high-mileage Volkswagen Golf came in with a noisy engine and the aircon blowing warm. The engine mounts had sagged and the aircon compressor had failed. Both renewed, the shake and the warm air gone.

The brief

The Golf had two complaints, both classic high-mileage ones: a noisy engine with vibration through the cabin, and the aircon blowing warm. The team looked at both. The noise traced to sagged engine and gearbox mounts, and the warm air to a failed aircon compressor. He had it all done in the one visit. The engine and gearbox sit on rubber mounts that absorb the shake, and as the rubber ages it sags so the drivetrain moves around and the vibration and noise come through. The aircon compressor pumps the refrigerant that cools the cabin, and when it fails there's no cooling, plus a broken-up compressor can leak debris through the system. Both are wear items that go at high mileage, so it was the engine and gearbox mount set plus a compressor replacement done properly with a flush, drier and recharge.

The diagnosis

On the lift each mount got a pry-test, the engine and gearbox mounts sunk with cracked rubber and play under load. On the aircon, the compressor wasn't building pressure, its internals worn, and it had let a little debris into the lines. The condenser, the lines and the evaporator checked out, but with a failed compressor the system gets flushed regardless. So it was a drivetrain mount set plus a compressor replacement, with a flush, a fresh receiver-drier and a recharge.

The work

The engine and gearbox were taken onto transmission jacks, the worn mounts removed, and new genuine VW-spec mounts fitted across the set, the drivetrain checked sitting square, every fastener torqued. On the aircon, the refrigerant was recovered, the failed compressor removed, the system flushed, and a new genuine VW-spec compressor fitted with a fresh receiver-drier, the belt set back up, the system pulled down to vacuum and recharged with the correct weight of refrigerant and oil. A road test confirmed the vibration and the engine noise were gone, and the vents blew cold at idle.

The outcome

Smooth at idle, no vibration through the cabin, the engine note back to normal, and cold air at the vents. The Golf went home with both high-mileage complaints sorted. Worn mounts and a failed compressor are exactly what catches up with a car at this mileage, so doing both properly in one visit reset it.

The aircon recharged and cold air confirmed at the vents.
