The brief
Mr Tan was having difficulty starting his Passat, so he drove it up to us for a troubleshoot. Hard starting has a few possible causes, and a scan is the way to narrow it down rather than guessing. The fuel pump module delivers fuel to the engine at the right pressure, and when it starts to fail, the engine doesn't get the fuel it needs cleanly, so it's slow to fire up, runs poorly, stutters under load, and can starve for fuel when you ask for power. A faulty pump module doesn't recover, so it gets replaced, the system primed, and the starting and running checked.
The diagnosis
On the lift and on the scan, a fault code pointed at a faulty fuel pump module as the cause of the hard starting. The fuel lines, the filter and the rest of the fuel system were sound, the pump module was the fault. That's a fuel pump module replacement, rather than chasing a hard-start that's really the pump.
The work
The faulty fuel pump module was removed and a new genuine VW-spec module fitted, the connections checked tight, the system pressurised and checked for leaks. The fault code was cleared and the fuel pressure confirmed good with the engine running. A road test confirmed the engine starting first time, running cleanly, the fuelling steady, no hard starting, and no warning lights, all turned around in a day.
The outcome
The engine starting first time, running cleanly, the fuelling steady, no hard starting under load, and no warning lights, returned in a day. Mr Tan got the Passat back starting properly. Reading the fault rather than guessing meant we replaced the pump module that had actually failed, so it was one visit and done.
