Volkswagen Golf high-mileage service and repairs.

A high-mileage Volkswagen Golf came in for a service and the wear-and-tear repairs it had caught up with: worn front brakes, tired anti-roll bar links and perished coolant hoses. All sorted in one visit.

Volkswagen Golf parked at the workshop for a high-mileage service and repairs.

The brief

Mr Lim sent his Golf in for a service, and on a car with high mileage there's usually a list of wear-and-tear jobs that have caught up with it. The service inspection turned up three: the front brakes worn, the anti-roll bar drop links tired, and a couple of coolant hoses perished. All of it sorted in the one visit, the efficient way. A service runs through the whole car, and on a high-mileage one the inspection earns its keep, catching the brakes near the end, the suspension joints with play, and the cooling hoses going hard before any of it becomes a roadside problem. Brakes are a safety job, drop links a noise and handling job, coolant hoses an overheat waiting to happen, so the call was the service plus those three.

The engine oil and filter changed on the high-mileage Volkswagen Golf.

The diagnosis

The service check went through everything. The oil and filters and a couple of fluids were due; the front pads were worn near the end and the discs scored; the front anti-roll bar drop links had worn ball joints with play; and a couple of coolant hoses were perished and starting to weep. The rest of the car checked out. So it was a high-mileage service plus a front brake axle set, a drop link pair, and the worn coolant hoses.

The worn front pads and scored disc flagged on the service inspection.
The worn anti-roll bar drop links with loose ball joints.
The perished coolant hoses found weeping.

The work

The engine oil and filter were changed, the air and cabin filters replaced, the fluids topped, and a full diagnostic scan run. Both front discs and the worn pads were removed and a new genuine VW-spec set fitted and bedded in, the calipers serviced. Both front anti-roll bar drop links were replaced with a new genuine pair. The perished coolant hoses were renewed with new hoses and clamps, the system refilled, bled and pressure tested. A road test confirmed a clean start, steady running, quiet, even front braking with a firm pedal, no knock from the front, and the gauge sitting steady with no coolant loss.

The new front brakes installed and bedded in, the calipers serviced.

The outcome

A clean bill of health on the Golf, fresh oil and filters, sharp quiet front braking on a new axle set, the front-end knock gone, the coolant leak sorted, and the wear-and-tear list cleared in one visit. The car went home serviced and sorted. A high-mileage car carries a list of jobs, so catching them all on the service inspection and doing them together kept Mr Lim's Golf solid and reliable for a good while yet.
