Compounding

Compounding is the first, most aggressive stage of paint correction, using a coarse cutting compound and abrasive pad to level out deeper scratches and swirl marks.

What it means

Compounding is the heavy-cutting step that opens a paint correction job. A coarse cutting compound, paired with an abrasive pad on a machine polisher, is worked across the panel to remove deeper defects: scratches, heavy swirl marks, sanding marks, and oxidation that finer work cannot touch. It does this by levelling away a thin, controlled amount of clear coat so the surrounding paint sits flush with the bottom of the defect, making the mark disappear. Because compounding removes more clear coat than gentler stages, it is used only where it is genuinely needed, and a panel has a finite amount of clear coat to give. Compounding alone leaves its own faint haze and micro-marring from the abrasives, so it is always followed by finer polishing stages that refine the surface and restore full clarity and gloss.
