Exterior detailing is the full outside-the-car service: wash, decontamination, paint cleanup, and protection of the paint, glass, wheels, and trim.
What it means
Exterior detailing covers every surface a car shows to the world: paint, glass, wheels, tyres, and trim. It goes well beyond a wash. A typical session starts with a pre-wash to lift loose dirt, then a careful contact wash using clean mitts and the two-bucket method to avoid grinding grit into the clear coat. Next comes decontamination, which removes the bonded contamination a wash cannot shift: clay bar work for embedded particles, an iron remover for brake-dust fallout, and a tar remover for road tar. With the paint truly clean, the detailer assesses the finish and may carry out machine polishing to remove swirl marks and restore gloss. Wheels are cleaned face and barrel, tyres are dressed, glass is cleaned inside the scope of the exterior, and plastic trim is treated so it does not look chalky. The session ends with a protective layer, a sealant, wax, or coating, so the freshly cleaned paint is sealed against the elements. Exterior detailing is the outside half of a full detail; interior detailing handles the cabin.

Intense equatorial sun fades and oxidises unprotected paint, sudden heavy downpours leave water spots and mineral marks, and humidity keeps brake dust and pollen bonded to the surface.
