Primer

Primer is the first coat applied in a spray painting job after panel preparation, creating a uniform surface for paint to adhere to and sealing the substrate against corrosion.

What it means

Primer is the layer most owners never think about, but it is what determines whether the finished paint will hold up over time. After panel beating, filling, and sanding, the bare metal or plastic surface is too porous and uneven to spray colour onto directly. Primer fills small imperfections, gives the base coat a consistent surface to grip, and seals the substrate. Different primer formulas exist for different materials. Etching primer is used on bare aluminium to bite chemically into the metal. High-build primer is used to bury small surface imperfections. Plastic adhesion primer is used on bumpers and trim pieces. The wrong primer for the wrong substrate causes peeling, blistering, or poor colour hold-out within months, which is why this step is one of the silent quality markers of a respray.

Why it matters in Singapore

Singapore's heat and humidity test every interface in a paint stack. A primer that bonds badly will cause failures faster here than in cooler markets. For owners whose car has had previous repairs, badly primed panels are also a major source of resale discounting once a buyer's inspection reveals the issue.
