Door skin

The door skin is the outer panel of a car door, the visible painted surface that wraps around the door frame and folds over the inner door structure.

What it means

A car door is built in two main parts. The door shell (or door frame) is the inner structural assembly that holds the hinges, latches, window mechanism, side-impact reinforcement, and electronics. The door skin is the outer panel, typically thin steel or aluminium, that wraps around the shell and is bonded or hemmed to it at the edges. When a door is damaged in a collision, the question is whether the damage is contained to the skin (where a skin-only replacement is possible) or extends into the shell (where the whole door has to be removed, repaired, or replaced). Skin-only replacement is a cost-saving option: the workshop separates the old skin from the shell at the factory bond, fits a new OEM skin, re-bonds the edges, and sprays the new skin. It preserves the original door shell with all its electronics, side-impact bar, and wiring. Done well, it is invisible. Done poorly, the bond fails over time and the door rattles or comes loose at the edges.

Why it matters in Singapore

Singapore parking-knock damage usually concentrates in the lower middle of the door, where a pillar from another car or a bicycle handlebar lands. That damage often stays within the door skin, which makes skin-only replacement the right call rather than a full door swap. The labour saving is real, especially on premium cars where door electronics make a full door replacement very expensive.
