Fabric protection
Fabric protection is the spray-applied treatment that bonds to fabric upholstery to resist liquid spills, stains, and quick-onset contamination.
What it means
Fabric protection works by depositing a thin water-and-oil-repellent layer on the surface fibres of the upholstery. Liquids spilled on protected fabric bead up and sit on the surface for a few minutes before slowly absorbing, giving the owner time to wipe them away before they soak in. Without protection, the same liquid (especially coffee, soft drinks, and oily sauces) absorbs immediately into the foam padding underneath, where it becomes much harder to remove. Fabric protection is best applied to freshly cleaned, dry upholstery: it bonds better to clean fibres and lasts longer. The treatment typically lasts six to twelve months in normal use, longer on areas with less contact wear. Reapplication is straightforward and does not require professional equipment, but the application technique (uniform coverage, controlled spray, proper dwell time) matters for results. Fabric protection is not bullet-proof: a major spill still needs prompt attention, and oil-based stains still benefit from professional shampooing. But it buys time and reduces the worst-case outcomes.
Why it matters in Singapore
Singapore drivers eat and drink in their cars more than most. Hawker-centre takeaway, kopi runs, and bubble tea make spill events a routine risk. Fabric protection on upholstery (particularly on the driver's seat and passenger seat where most spills happen) is one of the simpler ways to reduce the long-term staining that accumulates over a 10-year COE term.
