Spot welding
Spot welding joins sheet-metal panels by fusing them at small, localised points with electrical resistance heat, the factory method for assembling body panels.
What it means
Spot welding, also called resistance welding, joins two overlapping pieces of sheet metal at a single small point. A pair of copper electrodes clamps the panels together and passes a heavy electrical current through that exact spot. The metal resists the current, heats up rapidly, and the two sheets melt into one another. When the current stops, the joint cools and solidifies into a small, strong fused button. No filler rod is used, and the heat is concentrated, so the surrounding metal stays relatively cool and undistorted. Carmakers build bodies this way because it is fast, repeatable, and leaves a clean, flush join. A typical car body holds several thousand spot welds. In bodywork, spot welding is how a replacement panel is fixed to the body in a way that copies the original factory join, which is why a workshop drilling out old welds and laying down new ones is doing structural work, not cosmetic work.
Why it matters in Singapore
When a Singapore car needs a quarter panel, a rocker panel, or a rear section replaced after an accident, the new panel is usually spot welded on, mirroring how the factory built the car. The quality of those welds matters for insurance and for safety: a panel tacked on with too few or weak welds will not behave correctly in a future collision and can fail an inspection. Local insurers and assessors expect collision repairs to restore the original joining method, so proper spot welding is part of returning a car to a roadworthy, claim-compliant state rather than just making it look whole again.
How Revol Carz handles this
Revol Carz carries out panel replacement and structural repair at our Toh Guan facility, restoring factory-style joins where the original build used them. Once the metalwork and welds are sound, the repaired area is primed and refinished with Spies Hecker paint, computer colour matched, and oven-baked cured in our Italian Saima dust-free booth. Owners get WhatsApp updates as the job moves through each stage.
