Plastic welding

Plastic welding repairs cracked or torn plastic bumpers and trim by melting a compatible filler rod into the damage with controlled heat.

What it means

Plastic welding fixes a cracked or split plastic part by fusing it back together rather than just gluing the surface. Modern bumpers, splitters, and many trim pieces are made of thermoplastics, which soften when heated and re-harden when they cool. A plastic welder uses a heat source, often a hot-air gun or a heated tip, to melt the edges of the crack along with a filler rod made of a matching plastic. The molten filler flows into the damage and bonds with the parent material, so once it cools the repair is part of the panel, not a patch sitting on top of it. The crack is usually welded from both the back and the front for strength, then the front face is sanded smooth, skimmed with a flexible filler if needed, primed, and painted so the repair disappears. The key requirement is matching the filler rod to the bumper's plastic type, because incompatible plastics will not fuse and the repair will fail.

Why it matters in Singapore

Bumper damage is one of the most common jobs on Singapore roads. Tight multi-storey carparks, kerbs, and slow-speed knocks in heavy traffic crack and tear plastic bumpers far more often than they bend metal. Replacing a whole bumper is costly and, for many cars, slow to source. A sound plastic weld lets the original bumper stay on the car, which is cheaper, faster, and avoids a panel that may not colour-match perfectly. For a well-kept car heading towards a COE renewal decision, a properly welded and repainted bumper looks original and protects resale value.

How Revol Carz handles this

Revol Carz repairs cracked and torn bumpers at our Toh Guan facility, welding the plastic with a matching filler rather than defaulting to a full replacement where a weld will hold. Once the repair is shaped and smoothed, the bumper is primed and refinished with Spies Hecker paint, computer colour matched to the rest of the car, and oven-baked cured in our Italian Saima dust-free booth. Owners get WhatsApp updates through the job.
