Workshop authorisation
Workshop authorisation is the relationship a workshop holds with one or more motor insurers, allowing it to handle accident repair claims directly with the insurer on the customer's behalf.
What it means
Singapore motor insurers maintain workshop panels: lists of independent workshops authorised to handle collision and bodywork claims under the insurer's terms. When an authorised workshop handles a claim, it can invoice the insurer directly for the approved repair (subject to the policy excess), the customer does not need to pay upfront and then claim back, and the documentation flows through pre-agreed channels. Some policies require the customer to use a panel workshop to qualify for direct billing; using an off-panel workshop may mean the customer pays first and submits for reimbursement, often with additional documentation. For comprehensive policies in particular, the panel relationship is one of the practical reasons to choose a specific workshop. The trade-off is that owners who want a particular workshop that is not on their insurer's panel sometimes have to make a choice at policy renewal time. Workshop authorisation also typically covers warranty work on accessories and certain insurer-funded promotions.
Why it matters in Singapore
Most Singapore comprehensive-insurance customers discover the panel concept only after an accident, when the claims process surfaces the choice. Knowing in advance which workshops are on your insurer's panel (and whether your insurer offers free workshop choice) shapes both the policy and the service relationship. Some owners switch insurers specifically to keep using their preferred workshop.
