EA888

EA888 is Volkswagen Group's 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine family, used in many Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and SEAT models since 2008.

What it means

The EA888 has gone through three main generations (Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3) and many sub-variants. Across all of them, the engine is a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four with direct fuel injection (FSI/TFSI) that powers a huge slice of the Volkswagen and Audi lineup, from Golf GTI to Audi A4 to Tiguan. The engine is generally a strong performer, but the Gen 1 and Gen 2 versions are infamous for a piston-ring design issue that causes elevated oil consumption, sometimes a litre per 1,000 km or worse. Volkswagen issued service campaigns for affected vehicles. Gen 3 EA888s addressed the issue with a redesigned piston, but earlier engines still on Singapore roads continue to need attention. Other common EA888 service items include timing chain (replaced by belt on Gen 3), water pump, PCV valve, and intake-manifold carbon buildup that benefits from periodic walnut blasting on direct-injection units.

Why it matters in Singapore

EA888 oil consumption is one of the most common reasons a Singapore Volkswagen or Audi owner ends up at an independent specialist for a second opinion. Authorised-dealer recommendations have varied over the years, and owners are sometimes quoted full engine rebuilds when a more targeted fix is appropriate. Knowing the EA888 engine intimately changes what gets quoted.

How Revol Carz handles this

Revol Carz Garage diagnoses EA888 oil consumption with ODIS-equivalent diagnostics and a structured oil-loss test, then scopes the right repair (PCV, piston rings, or full overhaul depending on findings). OEM parts only.
